Aims

This module enables students to gain a thorough understanding of the operation of retail and investment banks in the financial system and the economy as a whole. Attention is paid to the informational asymmetries and market frictions as well as to topics concerned with bank performance, the measurement and management of individual bank risks, the bank systemic risk, and the role of banks in the propagation of a financial crisis. The various regulatory and supervisory policies designed to prevent or to address the problems in the operation of the banking system across time are presented and discussed. Some key knowledge on sustainable and green banking is also offered.

Outline Of Syllabus

The key topics that this module covers are the following:

Financial Markets & Financial Institutions; Financial Intermediation Theories; The Role of Asymmetric Information in the Banking Sector; Bank Balance Sheet & Income Statement; Bank Performance; Individual Banking Risks; Systemic Risk; Bank Risk Management; Bank Regulation & Supervision; Securitisation & The Sub-Prime Mortgage Crisis; Sustainable and Green Banking.

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

1. Thorough understanding of the roles of retail and investment banks within the financial system.
2. Critical analysis of the main economic concepts and theories which underlie the operation of the banking sector.
3. Ability to analyse the role of informational asymmetries in banking and their impact on the main activities of banks.
4. Evaluation of bank performance and risk-taking and critical discussion of bank regulation and supervision.

Lectures present, discuss, and analyse the key theories, concepts, tools, and techniques in Retail and Investment Banking.

Small group teaching (i.e., Seminars) illustrate the material covered in lectures and are mainly based on case studies, numerical exercises, and real-life examples to help student to acquire a more practical view of the material covered in lectures.

The 90 minute closed book written examination will be based on a mixture of theoretical/essay-type and numerical/practical questions that will meet the Intended Learning Aims and the Learning Outcomes of the module.
