Aims

As an alternative to the Dissertation on the MA Professional Translating for European Languages, you can produce and evaluate a substantial piece or portfolio of high-quality practical translating work, building on core skills acquired in taught translating or interpreting modules respectively.

In a separate Commentary you evaluate the work and discuss issues arising from it.

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

Students should bring together and develop concepts encountered in the taught part of the programme in order to evaluate one’s own translating work and comment on issues arising from it.

Intended Skill Outcomes

Students will be able to:
* perform a substantial piece of practical translating work in B>A-language* mode to starter-professional standard;
* prepare for and carry out translating assignments professionally;
* conduct advanced research into translating studies;
* demonstrate appropriate use of relevant sources.

(*A-language is the translator’s language of main use (typically the mother tongue) and B-language the language of secondary use (typically a foreign or second language))

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

The tutorials provide guidance and in-depth feedback. They allow students to bring together ideas they have developed during the taught part of the programme and apply theory through practice. They also encourage the development of independent study and research skills. They also facilitate monitoring of student progress; students are encouraged to assess their own progress to identify and resolve their specific learning issues.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The assessment tests both the students’ knowledge of theories and their ability in translating. It also allows students to demonstrate their ability to apply the principles and techniques learned to a simulated real-life project.

To pass this (MA Professional Translating for European Languages) module, candidates must gain a minium mark of 50 on the portfolio and the commentary separately" It was felt unacceptable by staff for a candidiate to obtain a "professional translation" MA with a failed translation portfolio compensated by a pass on the commentary. This brings French/German/Spanish Translation Project in line with the Chinese/Japanese Translation/Interpreting Project (SML8099)
