Aims

As a part of the CPP programme, the module aims to develop students' knowledge of an aspect of planning practice. The module is intrinsically linked to the RTPI’s Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) process which allows students to include the CPP as part of the post-initial qualification period of experience for professional membership.

The module’s specific aims are:

1. Explore an aspect of planning practice in depth
2. Develop professional practice expertise, through producing a high quality professional report for a specific client or client group
3. Develop investigative and analytical capability

Work placement is at the core of Stage 4 of Newcastle’s RTPI accredited planning programme, providing hands-on experience of the planning process.

In order for students to reflect on their experiences, and to develop their skills in writing professional reports, students are asked to produce a report examining one issue of planning practice in-depth.

Outline Of Syllabus

Completion of a professional report for a specific target audience, exploring one issue of planning practice.
Alternative Form of Assessment if the CPP placement is curtailed:
Completion of a 2000 word report that contextualizes a current topic of planning within the relevant policy framework. The report will discuss the topic chosen, in terms of the policy, practice or procedural issues that it raises. Where possible research should allow the student to examine similar issues elsewhere (through online research) and to include the views of colleagues or other professionals in reaching their conclusions and recommendations that will address the issue/s.

Learning Outcomes

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The aims of doing the report are to:
-       explore an aspect of planning practice in depth
-       develop professional practice expertise, through producing a high quality professional report for a specific client or client group
-       develop investigative and analytical capability

The objective is to improve the students’ abilities to write professional reports, develop an area for research and solving the research problem.
