Aims

-To provide an opportunity to develop an in-depth understanding of Green Infrastructure (GI), nature based solutions and landscape issues.
-To develop an understanding of the existing role of GI, NbS and Landscape planning in professional practice through project work relating to real issues.
-The opportunity to demonstrate GI, NbS and landscape planning skills in project work.

This module will allow students to follow up and deepen their understanding of GI, nature based solutions and landscape planning gained in semester 1. Students will work on a project for which they will write the brief. Students may work in groups or individually, but where the work is predominantly group work a clear individual contribution must be shown. Students will present their work at key stages for review during the semester.

Outline Of Syllabus

Semester 2:

Project-based work relating to GI, nature based or landscape planning will be carried out individually. This may be presented in a wide range of formats e.g. as a written strategic document or graphic landscape plan with supporting evidence.

Learning Outcomes

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

•A further understanding of GI and nature based solutions/approaches and landscape issues.

•The exploration and development of a personal approach to a specific GI planning, nature based or landscape issues and the development of an appropriate methodology for organising, analysing, synthesising and interpreting complex data relating to large scale landscapes.

•An understanding of present tools and techniques available for GI, nature based or landscape planning focusing on a particular area of study which may cover urban, peri-urban, rural and/or coastal or other landscape contexts.

•The further development of an awareness of the requirements of working on multi-disciplinary planning projects.

•A further understanding of the issues of GI, nature based or landscape planning in response to the need to create more sustainable landscape-scale solutions.

Intended Skill Outcomes

The development of an ability to take a methodological and integrated approach to GI, nature based or landscape planning issues to solve a particular landscape-scale problem as identified in the personal brief.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Guided independent study provides opportunities for students to select, investigate and develop a project related to their own particular interests.

Group sessions provide opportunities for the introduction of advanced GI, NbS and Landscape planning techniques by tutors, the discussion and sharing of information, the review of project achievements and the monitoring of progress. Individual tutorial sessions provide focused support for student project development.

Semester 2:

The project submission and presentation will indicate the depth of understanding of GI, nature based solution or landscape approaches in response to a specific and identified landscape scale issue. It will allow students to pursue a particular area of interest and show their skills in problem solving related to the issue. Assessment will be based on subject matter research, methodology development, creativity, analysis and communication of results.
