Aims
This module will provide an introduction to the practical, legal and professional dimensions of the basic work of surveying in relation to planning and development. It will meet the requirements of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in introducing students to key issues in the valuation of land and property and the production and understanding of development appraisals/economic viability assessments. These areas of skills and knowledge will be conveyed in the context of reflexive professional practice through case examples and exercises. The module will provide a forum for contextualising knowledge of regulation and practice in the field of planning gained from other modules within a context of working within or alongside the surveying profession.

Intended Knowledge Outcomes
By the end of this module students will be able to:
• Outline the key drivers of value and the techniques and procedures for conducting valuation, in relation to the principles set out in the RICS Appraisal and Valuation Standards in order to explain the purposes of valuation and the importance of professional independence and objectivity.
• Outline the content of development appraisals and understand how planning issues may be reflected within them in order to explain their role in the marketplace and the planning and development process.
Intended Skill Outcomes
By the end of the module students will be able to:
• Demonstrate a clear ability to interpret and explain the numerical output of valuation and appraisal processes as utilised in the planning and development process.
