Neil's major research interests include invertebrate endocrinology, physiology and biochemistry, peptidomics, novel pesticide targets and delivery systems (including invertebrate hormones and receptors, modifying reproductive behaviour, novel toxins and RNA-interference) biopesticides and biorational pesticides. He conducts research and provides management for collaborative projects on native, invasive and emerging pests for customers including Defra, Levy boards, Innovate UK and the European Commission. A major impact of this work is that it contributes towards control strategies and advising policy to government (Defra (Plant Health), EU commission and the European Food Safety Authority.

Neil has authored or co-authored over 85 peer-reviewed papers. He is a member of the industry-led spotted winged drosophila working group and the Royal Entomological Societ.

Neil manages a variety of projects and is the project coordinator for the EU-funded project - Strategies to develop effective, innovative and practical approaches to protect major European fruit crops from pests and pathogens.
