Aims

To enable students to understand how businesses develop and implement strategic choices.

To understand and analyse business objectives, market position, and internal and external factors affecting strategic choices.

Outline Of Syllabus

Analysis of the internal and external strategic position of organisations, both international and domestic.

Identification, justification and selection of appropriate strategic options for an organisation.

Implementation of strategic options, including marketing, human resource management and the effect of changing technology.

Learning Outcomes

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

By the end of the module students will:

- Have an understanding and appreciation of major aspects of strategic management and control.

- Be able to employ appropriate models, framework and techniques to assist with the analysis of a business situation.

- Further develop problem solving skills and to start to develop analysis and evaluation.

Intended Skill Outcomes

•       To explain, analyse and evaluate the consequences of an organisation’s current strategic direction including objectives, market position, organisational structure and technology developments;
•       To use data to evaluate the likely consequences of strategic choices and technology developments, and recommend business and digital strategies to meet the objectives of an organisation;
•       To recommend appropriate methods for an organisation to implement and monitor strategies including strategies for technology and innovation, and demonstrate how data can be used subsequently to measure and monitor strategic performance; and
•       To explain and evaluate ethical issues and recommend appropriate actions, considering all stakeholders and the public interest.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

This module aims to introduce students to some key concepts relating to business strategy. Lecture materials are used to explain the issues, and to introduce theory, concepts and techniques. Practice questions and discussion boards will allow for discussion and application of the material covered and issues raised. Students will have the opportunity to develop their understanding and judge their progress in these sessions. Reading is required to support the module and is essential to developing a rounded view of the material.
