Aims

The Student Exchange Programme has been negotiated to enable Stage 5 MArch students to carry out study abroad at worldwide partner schools of architecture.

The other schools involved in this agreement are those listed in the International Office website ( https://www.ncl.ac.uk/mobility/experience-world/exchanges_outgoing/ ) which might be updated yearly as a result of reviewing of existing agreements and the establishment of new partnerships.

The Student Exchange Programme gives students the opportunity to take modules in the partner institutions during their exchange abroad, and to gain recognition for those credits back in Newcastle to be considered in their degrees. Furthermore, the Exchange Programme offers the possibility to engage in a different culture and to develop foreign language skills. Students will be expected to engage fully with the educational experience available through the programmes of the host institution.

Outline Of Syllabus

The student exchange will take place in the second semester of Stage 5 and those taking part will be expected to carry out the programmes of study as offered by the host institution.
Providing the work is to a passing standard, it will be accepted as equivalent to the Stage 5 work it replaces. Marks awarded during the Exchange Programme will be moderated against the standard in Newcastle for their recognition in the degree.

NB A full year exchange option is available between Stage 5 and Stage 6 through taking the route of Master of Architecture with International Study Year. Destinations available to both exchanges (semester 2 only, or year-long International Study Year) might be different depending on signed partnerships and availability of places. Further information and details are available for each year in the International Office relevant website –listed above– in due course.

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

Whilst at the host institution, students will select a design project or design projects and associated lecture modules from the programme of study on offer. In total this programme must add up to a full-time student workload for one semester and should be equivalent to 60 University of Newcastle credits (30 ECTS).

Students are required to fill out a Learning Agreement including all selected modules for the approval of both institutions. Students are strongly advised to consult with their exchange coordinators and DPD as they make their course selections and to maintain contact during their period of exchange. The Learning Agreement must be signed by the Exchange Coordinator of both institution (Architecture in Newcastle, and abroad in the host institution). The student is responsible to manage this document, discuss it, and fill it on time – i.e. prior to the exchange start.

Coursework carried out at the host institution will be assessed upon return in a formal design and academic portfolio review and marks will be assigned by tutors at Newcastle University. The marks assigned at this review will then be taken into account in the final degree classification calculations.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

N/A - Study abroad exchange module, students undertake work at another institution. Pattern of study shall be agreed with the Exchange Coordinator in Architecture and the Degree Programme Director before the commencement of the period of study, as well as with the relevant Exchange Coordinator at the host institution during the time abroad. The student is responsible to manage this document, discuss it, and fill it on time – i.e. prior to the exchange start.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The marks obtained from the host institution are considered provisional. Students returning to Newcastle will undergo a formal academic and design portfolio review about their work abroad whilst at host institution and will receive a final mark. Please note that this mark may differ from that of the partner institution. Portfolios will be reviewed, and marks moderated by the Exchange Coordinator and DPD of the Master of Architecture against the contemporary student cohort in Newcastle for the modules seeking to get recognition.

Students on exchange programs are advised to maintain contact with the DPD and Exchange Coordinator to facilitate the transition between institutions.
