Aims

The module provides an introduction to Urban Energy as an emergent academic field of inquiry and professional practice. It is intended specifically for students who wish to gain an awareness and understanding of how energy is shaping our urban environments.

Outline Of Syllabus

The module consists of a series lectures, workshops, and seminars delivered in a block teaching format and additional, weekly, project supervisory tutorials with the module leader to research a selected project in depth. The module explores Urban Energy holistically and thematically. As a way of example, key themes to be explored are: Policy, Technology, Analysis, and Practice.

Students will be assessed through the production of a report on a selected case study or creative project. The report should therefore demonstrate the students’ ability to apply the principles, theories and practice of Urban Energy into a study proposal as well as outlining future work directions. Qualitative, quantitative, creative or mixed approaches can be followed. As a way of example, students could carry out focus groups, surveys, creative interventions or analytical analysis on salient aspects of the selected Urban Energy case study or creative project.

Analysis techniques and methods to evaluate policy and technology initiatives in urban areas.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

A mixture of scheduled and structured activities, including recorded mini lectures, reading and skills based tasks to be carried out individually and in small student groups replace a chronological lecture based module, in order for students to build their knowledge of urban energy and develop the skills to locate and evaluate information independently.
