Aims
The module will give students an appreciation of the ‘trilemma’ that exists with transport of moving towards a decarbonised set of transport infrastructures (and the transport systems and services that utilise them) whilst also ensuring we transition to infrastructure that is both resilient and adaptable to the increasing negative impacts of climate change and the extreme weather events that we will experience.
Outline Of Syllabus
Lectures and seminars exploring:
-The grand challenge of decarbonisation and climate change from a transport and mobility perspective
-Policy and trade-offs
-An appreciation of transport infrastructure and transport modes
-Carbon counting, new materials and decarbonisation of infrastructure
-Low and zero carbon energy vectors for transport vehicles and vessels
-Understanding risk, performance, recovery and resilience
-Adaptation Strategies
-Real world case studies
-Security
-The National DARe Hub.

Intended Knowledge Outcomes
Understand the complexity of trade-offs/choices between decarbonisation and resilience (C5, C6)
Formulate solutions to making the transport system more resilient and adaptable to climate change (C1, C6)
Be confident to use risk and performance parameters to better understand choices and costs of mitigation (C4, C5, C15)
Think through case studies to understand the systems nature of transport and its dependencies in a climate weather impacted world (C4, C5, C7, C8)
Have knowledge of the policies, regulations and operation of transport systems and the trade off with engineering and optimal design ((C7, C9, C15)
Impacts on society, businesses and citizens (C5, C11)
Have specific knowledge regarding how security is embedded in transport infrastructure and operations (C10)
Intended Skill Outcomes
At the end of the module a student should be able to:
-Appreciate the complexity and interdependencies within transport infrastructure systems and their synergies with the energy system (C5, C6)
-Have an understanding of the challenges of climate change and the likely extremes of climate related weather that will impact on the Nation and on Transport Systems in the future – and engineering choices (C1, C7, C8, C13, C10)
-Analyse and make judgments on risk, performance and cost. (C9, C14)
-Be familiar with the policy landscape (C5)
-Be aware of the stakeholders and drivers in this sector (C15)
-Able to embed considerations of adaptation and resilience in future engineering projects (C7)

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The coursework tests students’ ability to apply knowledge and consider the ‘whole system problem’ and also prepare a presentation to test effective communications skills.
The exam tests students’ understanding of the taught concepts, and ability to use the design and analytical skills taught.
