Aims
This module aims:
1)To explain the principles and theories of the design of shallow and deep foundations
2)To apply the concepts of foundations design through practical examples
3)To develop the design skills of a geotechnical engineer
4)To show the different foundation construction techniques
Summary: This module will build upon the soil mechanics principles and demonstrate how they are used for the design of shallow and deep foundations.
Outline Of Syllabus
This module will provide an overview of Eurocode 7 principles and their application in foundation design. It will cover design methodologies for both shallow and deep foundations. It will present classification criteria and methods of installation of piles. Special topics such as Geothermal Piles Offshore Foundations, and verification of Ultimate Limit State (ULS) of shallow foundations accounting for the soil’s saturation condition may be introduced. Practical applications, case studies, and discussions on emerging trends will be integrated to reinforce understanding and prepare students for real-world engineering challenges.
Learning Outcomes
Intended Knowledge Outcomes
The mapping of certain AHEPv4 learning outcomes to each intended knowledge outcome is indicated in each point. On successful completion of this module, students will have:
1) Demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of concepts and principles of the design of shallow and deep foundations. (M2, M5)
2) Solve engineering problems that require a geotechnical solution based on the assessment of the project requirements. (M1, M4)
3) Demonstrate their understanding of analytical methods (M3)
Intended Skill Outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have had opportunities to develop skills in:
1) Creative and innovative ability through the application of concept, theories and principles of geotechnics to produce optimum solutions to foundations design problems. (M1, M2, M5)
2) Understanding of the design and verification process (M4)
3) Understanding of analytical methods (M3)

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
The principles of foundations design and analysis are taught in lectures with several problem-solving small group teaching activities in order to gain an understanding of the design procedures. Analytical methods are taught during lectures and applied during the tutorial sessions. These methodologies will be used in the project work set as the assessment for the module.
