Aims
To provide students with an opportunity to observe and evaluate real-world transport systems and the policies that shape them.
Students will achieve this depth of insight through the following technical activities: a blend of taught sessions, interaction with a wide range of stakeholders, hands-on field study tours, workshops, and system-focused contextual analysis.
Outline Of Syllabus
Lecture series, workshops and seminars exploring the following:
- transport policy and planning at the national, regional, and local tiers;
- principles of transport systems management;
- assessment of transport-related environmental impacts; and
- the planning, delivery, and operation of public-transport networks.
Technical visits to public-transport operators, transport authorities, and other transport facilities (destinations and formats changing each year to reflect the stakeholders who agree to host).
Learning Outcomes
Intended Knowledge Outcomes
The mapping of certain AHEPv4 learning outcomes to each intended knowledge outcome is indicated in each point. By the end of the module, a student will be able to:
1. Explain how national, regional and local transport policies interact and shape stakeholder priorities. (M6)
2. Diagnose network-performance issues and design evidence-based interventions that balance key stakeholder goals. (M2)
3. Evaluate the environmental impacts of transport activity and recommend suitable mitigation strategies. (M7)
4. Critique the life cycle of public-transport systems and identify opportunities for service improvement. (M12)
5. Combine insights from technical visits with theory to propose realistic upgrades to real-world transport systems. (M17)
Intended Skill Outcomes
By the end of the module, a student will be able to:
1. Analyse transport policy documents at all tiers and summarise the key differences for decision-makers. (M4)
2. Develop and test small-scale traffic or pedestrian microsimulation models, noting their limitations. (M3)
3. Estimate the main environmental impacts of a transport scenario and propose suitable mitigation. (M7)
4. Audit public-transport performance and prepare a concise business-case report for improvement. (M12)
5. Gather and combine stakeholder insights from technical visits to refine proposed solutions. (M17)
6. Convert personal learning from the module into a focused continuing professional-development plan. (M18)
