Aims

This module aims to:
•       Provide students with a thorough understanding of spatial data types and sources and how to handle spatial data.
•       Introduce a range of geo-processing operations for spatial data analysis.
•       Introduce geospatial analytical approaches and spatial visualisation.

Outline Of Syllabus

This module will cover many aspects of GIS and spatial data concepts including:
•       GIS - the how and the why
•       Fundamental spatial types
•       Thematic mapping
•       Cartographic principles (map design)
•       Spatial analysis methods
•       Using terrains and height data
•       Data formats and transformations

Learning Outcomes

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

Students completing the module should learn how to identify and locate sources of spatial data and how to employ or transform these datasets to then be used for analysis and visualisations through map output. Students should also have an understanding of a variety of geo-processing tools and processes and how these can be used to solve complex problems. Knowledge of data presentation principles (cartographic design) should also be developed with how these can be applied to present spatial data to different audiences.

Intended Skill Outcomes

At the end of module students should be able to acquire spatial data from a variety of sources and use in GIS and be able to transform and prepare these for use in spatial analyses and/or the creation of maps. Students should be able to use GIS to carry out a range of analyses using tools and processes to deliver answers to complex problems with spatial data, as well as design and create map outputs to present results.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Lectures are used to introduce core concepts including data types, data sources, analysis methods and presentation approaches.

Practicals are used to provide hands-on exposure to data location, acquisition and synthesis. A number of processes are applied to the data to answer real-world problems and the results collated and presented in map and report form.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

Coursework 1 assesses core competencies in data handling, analysis and map presentation, including the ability to communicate with spatial data.

Coursework 2 requires the identification and acquiring of suitable data and the subsequent processing to solve a spatial problem, demonstrating knowledge in the responsible sourcing and use of data, problem solving ability, and the selection of the appropriate geo-processing tools. The written element will demonstrate critical analysis of data sources and processes applied and assess the interpretation of the analytical process.
