Aims

This module aims to give students:
•       An advanced understanding of professional translating practice from Chinese to English.
•       Experience of dealing with problems in translating at the advanced level.
•       Guidance in developing sufficient background knowledge in at least one area of specialism (conducted during CA1).

Outline Of Syllabus

This module is divided into smaller blocks of different subject areas according to what areas have been selected. These typically include economics, marketing, science and technology, business, medicine and health, politics, law, literature, and poetry. Other subject areas are possible depending on demand.

In lectures, the lecturer provides formative feedback on weekly homework (given the previous week as homework. As well as formative feedback, the lecturer provides both professional and theoretical context, and focuses on key problems via peer discussion and class discussion. In seminars, the lecturer provides guided translation practice with various group activities and discussions.

The themes and topics of individual lessons may change based on the progress made by students over the course of the module.

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

Students will gain the following learning outcomes:
•       Sufficient background knowledge, including terms, in the chosen subject areas.
•       Knowledge and understanding of protocol and etiquette in the professional settings of translation.
•       Knowledge and understanding of translating research skills.
•       Awareness of the latest developments in translating theory and the professional practice.
•       Knowledge of best practice in terms of professional, ethical, and business issues.
•       Knowledge in term management.

Over the course of the semesters, students will acquire the following skill outcomes:

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

•       The lectures provide both the professional and theoretical context to consolidate student learning.
•       The seminars are to be utilised for group learning and class discussions.
•       During the course of the module, students will gain an advanced understanding of translating several
areas of specialism. Furthermore, the private study will enable students develop in-depth-knowledge in
one area of specialism (as part of CA1).
