Aims
This module will assist students in learning to use computers effectively during their degree and beyond. It aims to ensure that learners are better informed in selecting appropriate tools for the job in hand, by supporting and developing appropriate skillset(s). It also provides a basic understanding of 'how computers work' and a practical introduction to common tools and technologies available on-campus and beyond.
Outline Of Syllabus
- Background to the use of computers, recent history and future directions.
- Using common applications to produce and manage professional documents, presentations and other media.
- Creating, sharing and collaborating online using web-based tools and publishing technologies.
- Management and integration of mobile and cloud-based computing facilities into your workflow.

To be able to:
- Discuss and describe the functionality of common computing systems and applications
- Appraise and discuss appropriate online tools for content creation, collaboration and sharing
- Demonstrate an awareness of the recent history and future of computing

- Make use of on-campus PC clusters and applications
- Using common applications to produce and manage professional documents, presentations and other media
- Identify and select appropriate tools as alternatives to MS Office
- Identify and select online tools for creating/sharing materials - along with considerations for their use

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Lectures will be used to introduce the learning material and for demonstrating the key concepts by example. Students are expected to follow-up lectures within a few days by re-reading and annotating lecture notes to aid deep learning.
This is a very practical subject, and it is important that the learning materials are supported by hands-on opportunities provided by practical classes. Students are expected to spend time on coursework outside timetabled practical classes.
Students aiming for 1st class marks are expected to widen their knowledge beyond the content of lecture notes through background reading.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The coursework and the problem-solving exercise give hands-on experience on computers and basic coding practices using HTML are both essential. This will involve students demonstrating advanced skills in Microsoft applications and basic coding practices with HTML.
