Aims

To acquire and demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of water chemistry, physics, microbiology and chemical engineering as applied to the treatment of water and wastewater.

Outline Of Syllabus

Aqueous chemistry: moles and equivalents, kinetics and equilibria including the concepts of pH, solubility and alkalinity.
Fundamental process engineering: mass balance, mass transfer and elementary chemical reactor theory.
Fluid physics: flow, pressure and energy relationships for water flowing through pipes and porous media.
Introductory cell biology: basic microbiology and biochemistry relating to water and wastewater processes.

On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:-

1.Understand the underlying basic biological, physical and chemical science principles and governing equations applicable to water and wastewater
2.Understand the relevant fundamental chemical engineering principles as applied to the processing of water and wastewater
