Aims

This module introduces a diverse set of topics that a professional graduate engineer is likely to encounter upon entering employment in the modern sustainable, risk conscious, commercial socio-economic environment.

Outline Of Syllabus

Company and project management dynamics - how businesses operate, projects are managed including quantitative considerations and how decisions are made in order to achieve objectives

Awareness of relevant legal requirements governing engineering activities, including personnel, health & safety, contracts, intellectual property rights, product safety and liability issues

Nurturing technology - how new technology is adopted by industry

Professional conduct and ethical issues

Understanding of the key drivers for business success, including innovation, calculated commercial risks and customer satisfaction

Learning Outcomes

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

By the end of this module, students should be able to:

Describe the concepts, tools and models commonly used in business and be able write and assess a basic business plan

Adopt a professional approach to providing solutions to society's problems in a manner that is economically, environmentally and ethically sound.

Describe the structure of companies and how decisions are made in companies at the top level.

Describe the value and nature of intangible assets such as intellectual property.

Describe how new technology is adopted in industry with particular reference to risk and funding.

Intended Skill Outcomes

At the end of this module students will be able to:

Understand and evaluate business, customer and user needs, including considerations such as the wider engineering context, public perception and aesthetics

Plan and manage the design process, encompassing cost drivers and evaluating outcomes

Prepare professional reports and presentations giving guidance on these points.

Be able to make complex decisions based upon incomplete information.

Behave in manner consistent with engineering ethics as defined by the RAEng statement of ethical principles.
