Aims

This module aims to prepare students for the world of Business and Accounting by giving them opportunities to develop knowledge and skills in accounting and the mathematics needed for these disciplines.
Through a mixture of lecture delivery and small group seminar interaction, students will be guided towards understanding the practical topics in the study of accounting.

Learning Outcomes

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

•       Understand the purpose of accounting
•       Be familiar with fundamental accounting terms
•       Know and understand revenue, costs and the different types of profit
•       Have a basic understanding of how to read, draw and interpret a company’s annual report and accounts
•       Be familiar and confident with using a range of different graphs
•       Know how to use computer software to create and edit graphs
•       Know and understand what is meant by cumulative frequency
•       Be able to define different averages and measures of spread

Intended Skill Outcomes

By the end of this module students will:

•       Be able to define key accounting terms with confidence
•       Be able to calculate revenue, costs and the different types of profit
•       Be able to read, draw and interpret two key financial statements: the Balance Sheet and Income Statement
•       Be able to interpret a range of different graphs
•       Be able to make decisions on the use of different graphs
•       Calculate different averages and measures of spread with confidence
•       Be able to interpret and analyse data using graphs, averages and spread

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Lectures are used to introduce material to students and expose theories and concepts. Seminars are used to discuss issues in business and develop skills through discussion and presentation. The smaller group sessions also allow greater scope for skills development. Workshops will be used to check that students understand the material and will be in small enough groups to allow individual questions and problems to be aired.

The assessment package has been designed to provide opportunities to develop important skills in coursework, whilst at the same time exposing students to unseen examination questions of various types to help them become accustomed to this mode of assessment.
