INU1514 | Architectural Design 1 |
Co Requisite Comment
Students taking this module must also complete INU1514.
Aims
The one semester module extends skills and knowledge gained in the first semester module INU1514. It is focused on introducing students to the complexity of architectural design by means of various design tasks and one more comprehensive but still small scale, architectural design project. Students will develop an understanding of the various contexts of architecture, the implications of urban and environmental contexts, the implications of social and cultural contexts, the impact and implications of orientation, climate and topography. Structural, ecological and economic considerations and calculations will be implemented in the design process.
The practical understanding of materials and construction methods and the development of simple construction details will enable students to develop an accomplished architectural design project from sketch design to construction plans.
Design tasks and exercises increase in size and complexity throughout both design modules (INU1514 and INU1515) enhancing the understanding of architectural and spatial qualities, and aspects of aesthetics and functionality in architecture. This will enable students to make informed and well-considered design decisions. Students will have the opportunity to apply theory and technology in their design decisions.
Outline Of Syllabus
The syllabus is an extension of the module Architectural Design INU1514, but is more focused on design practice and technicality in architectural design.
The outline syllabus will provide:
• practice in design development, methods and techniques
• an introduction to systematic site analysis and precedent study
• an introduction to urban development and socio-cultural contexts
• an introduction to the basics of structural systems, construction methods and materials
• an introduction to the basics of ergonomics and related requirements
• an introduction to Adobe Photoshop and CAD software
• an introduction to graphical and oral design project presentation
Learning Outcomes
Intended Knowledge Outcomes
Students will be able to:
• demonstrate awareness of the environmental implications of an architectural intervention
• understand how buildings can reflect and respond to social and cultural contexts
• transform and synthesise research outcomes and inspirational ideas into coherent design proposals
• apply geometry and trigonometry for precise design development
• demonstrate knowledge and understanding of basic construction methods and properties of materials
• understand the importance of verbal, written and graphical communication skills
• listen and respond to questions and criticisms raised in discussions and presentations
Intended Skill Outcomes
Students will be able to:
• formulate and respond imaginatively and appropriately to simple programmes or briefs
• conceptualise and develop architectural design solutions
• methodically communicate design decisions visually, verbally and in written form
• appropriately present design proposals using a variety of media
• apply basic computer aided design tools such as AutoCAD and Sketchup
• effectively collaborate on team tasks and individual projects
• engage in informed debates and discussions about architectural issues

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Teaching is studio based practical and interactive. Lectures provide theoretical contents and the weekly introduction, small group teaching in form of roaming studio tutorials provides students with an opportunity to practice, to engage in discussions and receive guidance for their design projects. Independent study provides students with an opportunity to research, to prepare for formative and summative tasks and extended self-guided study.

Other Assessment
Description | Semester | When Set | Percentage | Comment |
---|---|---|---|---|
Design/Creative proj | 2 | M | 100 | A domestic scale design project with formal presentation |
Assessment Rationale And Relationship
A single, comprehensive design project runs the duration of semester 2. The project focuses on the application of design skills and technical knowledge on a timber-framed, domestic size design project. Students will have to demonstrate contextual understanding and analytical skills as well as methodical conceptual design development and practical design skills.
The project is evaluated against a set of criteria outlined in the project descriptions and requires an understanding of and an ability to apply a particular body of knowledge (related to the project) and a particular range of skills and techniques (introduced in the project).
Following each project assessment, whether interim (formative) or final (summative), students receive a set of written comments in relation to the declared criteria, together with a mark. Further oral feedback is given by the project leader at project reviews/feedback meetings.
