Aims

This module focuses on the use of published company accounts. The aim of the module is to develop an understanding of what the data in a company's accounts means, how to interpret that data, and how to use it to either judge the financial performance of a firm, or compare the performance of one firm with another. Students will also learn how to assess two different proposed projects/or investments and recommend which one they would recommend as the best project/investment, and why.

Outline Of Syllabus

The content of the module includes the following topic areas:

Interpreting published accounts
Sources of finance
Methods of investment and project appraisal
Use of rations to assess financial performance

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

On completion of the module the student will:
1. Have developed an understanding of what the data in a company's accounts means
2. Be able to analyse and interpret that data and what it says about the performance of that company
3. Be able to use the results of the interpretation to judge the financial performance of a firm
4. Be able to use the results of the interpretation to compare the performance of one firm with another.
5. Be able to asses two different proposed projects/or investments and recommend which one they would recommend as the best project/investment
6. Be able to explain their decisions

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Lectures are used to introduce material to students and explore theories and concepts. Small group teaching sessions are used to critically evaluate key issues within topics and develop skills through discussion, presentation, and set tasks. Study clinics (drop-in/surgery above) are used to deal with academic issues which may be causing students problems.
