Aims
The International Study Year Module enables students to study at an international partner institution whilst remaining enrolled as a full time student at Newcastle University.
Outline Of Syllabus
Students study full-time for two semesters at the international partner institution. The international institutional partner determines the content of the syllabus. Students select from a range of modules offered by their host university, taking the approximate equivalent of 120 credits (60 ECTS). Students will generally be allowed greater flexibility to choose modules outside of their core discipline(s) than might be possible at Newcastle University, however the relevant School Exchange Coordinator must approve their final module selection. Regular contact between students and School Exchange Coordinator will be expected via email and online communication.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The assessment for ISY8000 is constituted by the coursework undertaken by students at international partner institutions, the format will vary within each institution and between modules.
Students will be required to produce a summary of the work carried out during the modules undertaken at the partner institution (as agreed with the School Exchange Coordinator and specified in the learning agreement). This constitutes a portfolio document which may include a mixture of text, drawings and other media. Translations to English will be required if the exchange is taken at a host institution which uses another language. The portfolio is submitted after the end of the placement abroad for the consideration of the Architecture Board of Studies.
The module is pass/fail (where a pass is equivalent to 50% on the Newcastle University grading scale) based on the assessment of the summary outlined above.
Students’ ability to pass assessments undertaken at the host institution is a demonstration of their capacity to adapt to a different culture and learning environment.
A failure in ISY8000 will result in the student being transferred back onto their original degree programme for the remainder of their degree studies.
