Aims

The aims of the module are:
A1 - To introduce fracture mechanics and fatigue analysis
A2 - To introduce the effects of shear stress in beams
A3 - To predict structural responses of structures under torsion
A4 - To deliver knowledge and skills to undertake finite element analysis for frame and plated structures.

Outline Of Syllabus

The module increases the awareness of structural behaviour and develops advanced structural and material concepts.

Topics include: finite element methods; shear stress in beams; torsion in open and closed thin-walled cross-sections; stress concentration factors, fracture mechanics and fatigue analysis of marine structures.

Learning Outcomes

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

On completing this module, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
IKO1 - Apply fracture mechanics and fatigue analysis to marine structures (C1, C2, C3, C5, C13).
IKO2 - Predict various responses of structures to different types of external loadings (C10).
IKO3 - Assess the effects of structural discontinuities, such as holes (C1, C2, C3, C5, C13).
IKO4 - Outline the principles and procedures of finite element analysis and formulation of bean element and derive equivalent nodal loads (C1, C2, C3, C5, C10, C13).
IKO5 - Discuss advantages and drawbacks of different types of finite elements (C1, C2, C3, C5, C13).

Intended Skill Outcomes

Upon completing the module students will be able to:
ISO1 - Analyse structural responses under various types of loads (C1, C2, C3, C5, C13).
ISO2 - Write well expressed and concise reports (C1, C2, C3, C5, C13).
ISO3 - Use computer software such as WORD, EXCEL to assist numerical calculation and presentation (C1, C2, C3, C5, C13).
ISO4 - Carry out finite element analysis for framework structures and plate structures (C1, C2, C3, C5, C13).

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Formal lectures are designed to deliver the theories and their relation to the current practice in the design and to explain the use of major techniques. (IKO1-IKO6).
The tutorial and practical sessions are a mix of supervised and self-organising activities in which the students practice use of the methods and apply to marine structures (ISO1-ISO4).

The independent study gives time for the students to read the classic and leading-edge papers on those topics.

Students should consult their timetable for up-to-date delivery information.
