Aims
To present an opportunity to undertake research on an appropriate marine related topic working largely alone, and to present in a structured form the results of that research
Outline Of Syllabus
The module handbook details the project framework in terms of research structure, milestones and arrangement for supervision. In addition key issues in carrying out a research project, such as project plan, literature review, writing a research proposal, and writing a report etc are addressed via: the handbook, consultation with the programme director (as part of the research proposal) and meetings with the supervisor.

Intended Knowledge Outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
IKO1 - specialist knowledge in the topic of the dissertation, including how elements of security risks and EDI are evaluated within the project.
(M2, M4, M5, M10, M11, M17, M18. Possibly others depending upon dissertation topic.)
Intended Skill Outcomes
On completing the module students will be able to develop the following subject specific skills and will be able to:

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
The dissertation provides an opportunity to be able to independently formulate, undertake and report on a research project (IKO1, ISO1-ISO7).
A suitable member of staff will be nominated as supervisor and will help to establish the scope and focus of the dissertation and is the primary point of contact for all technical and project management issues.
Students are responsible for maintaining regular contact with their supervisor.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The dissertation is intended to provide the students with an opportunity to carry out a substantial and largely independent piece of research (IKO 1). The examiners assess the ability of a student to produce a written research report which demonstrates the intended outcomes described in (IKO-1, ISO1-7).
