Aims

The aim of this module is for students to engage with and demonstrate understanding and knowledge of the literature and evidence base, underpinning the provision of fixed prosthodontic clinical care of patients.

Outline Of Syllabus

This module considers the following areas through directed self-study, interactive seminars and reflective practice:

• Introduction to the fundamentals of fixed prosthodontics
• Tooth supported fixed prosthodontics
• Implant supported fixed prosthodontics
• The evidence base supporting the materials used in fixed prosthodontics including biocompatibility
• The evidence base supporting understanding of relationships between fixed prosthodontics and the oral environment
• The evidence base supporting the design criteria for fixed prosthodontics
• The interface between fixed prosthodontics, the dental technician and dental laboratory
• The interface between fixed prosthodontics and endodontics
• The interface between fixed prosthodontics and Periodontics
• The interface between fixed prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry

Learning Outcomes

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

1. Discuss the evidence base, underpinning the provision of fixed prosthodontics
2. Discuss challenges in applying the evidence base in fixed prosthodontics to support clinical planning and delivery of care to patients
3. Discuss the evidence supporting the delivery of fixed prosthodontics in the context of the specialties of Endodontics, Periodontics, and Restorative Dentistry

Intended Skill Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

1. Build confidence on justifying clinical approaches to delivering fixed prosthodontics to patients based on evidence
2. Adapt approaches to the delivery of fixed prosthodontic care to patients by application of best available evidence
3. Challenge approaches taken by others in the delivery of fixed prosthodontics that are not based on best available evidence
4. Apply their knowledge and understanding to improve their effectiveness in the interactions between themselves, other specialties, the dental technician and dental laboratory

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Seminars and clinical case-based discussions will normally comprise of short presentations and/or small group discussions to draw on students’ understanding and own experiences as clinicians covering key themes underpinning delivery of the fixed prosthodontic management of patients. This will specifically address the following outcomes: IKOs 1-3

Methods of assessing the clinical needs of patients will also be discussed and links made to desired clinical outcomes, design of treatment strategies, treatment planning and the management of patients. This will address the following outcomes: ISOs 1-4

Students will undertake independent study, which will involve reading, application of the knowledge and skills in their clinical practice and by engaging in critical reflection. This will consolidate the achievement of the outcomes discussed above.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The learning outcomes are demonstrated by the students' ability to successfully undertake and pass the module assessment that requires them to apply their knowledge and understanding of the academic basis of fixed prosthodontics (skills outcomes), and critically appraise both the literature and their approach to clinical practice within this context (knowledge outcomes). In the examinations candidates will be expected to formulate an opinion to manage a clinical based scenario and support or defend this position through application and critique of the supporting literature of the fixed prosthodontic management of patients. This maps to the module outcomes: IKOs 1-3 and ISOs 1-4.

To pass this module students must obtain a scaled mark of 50% or above for each summative assessment.
