Aims

This interdisciplinary module covers fundamental aspects of tissue engineering with an emphasis on bone and cartilage tissue engineering. Relevant examples related to the clinical applications and limitations of tissue engineering in regeneration of human tissue will be discussed. Typical case studies of tissue engineering solutions that address current medical challenges will be evaluated.

Outline Of Syllabus

The module provides fundamental knowledge in biomaterials and tissue engineering methods used for human tissue regeneration. An overview of contemporary approaches to tissue engineering will be explored, including stem cells, scaffold design and bioreactors used in tissue engineering. A range of clinical applications of tissue engineering in the medical field, such as cartilage scaffolds, skin and vascular grafts, will be discussed.

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

At the end of this module students should be able to:

- apply a comprehensive knowledge of tissue engineering methods to address current medical challenges (M1 and M2)

- select appropriate biomaterials and tissue engineering techniques that could be used to regenerate and restore human tissue functions, acknowledging their limitations (M13)

Intended Skill Outcomes

At the end of this module students should be able to:

- select and critically evaluate technical literature and other sources of information to analyse specific tissue engineering strategies (M4)

- effectively present a specific tissue engineering topic at an appropriate technical level (M17 and M18)

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The Inspera digital exam will assess theoretical understanding of all aspects of the module. The students should be able to apply a broad range of knowledge to the healthcare applications of tissue engineering.

The oral presentation will assess communication skills on a specific topic, at a technical level suitable to the audience. The students should be able to select and critically evaluate technical literature, to effectively present their specific topic.

The formative assessment will help students to prepare for their summative examination, by reinforcing key concepts related to taught material covered during lectures.
