Aims

The module aims to develop the student's knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles of medicine design, development and manufacture. Students will develop the ability to formulate potential novel therapeutic compounds into world-class medicine to address current market needs and propose a sound strategy to do so. It covers the technologies to design, develop and analyse micro and nano-scale materials, systems and devices. Industrial expertise will offer students an insight into pharmaceutical product development.

Outline Of Syllabus

The module covers the following areas, delivered through a series of lectures and interactive face-to-face seminars.

-Biological barriers for drug delivery
-Routes of drug administration
-Drug formulation design and development
-Targeted drug delivery systems and carriers
-Medicines manufacturing and quality control
-Latest advances in drug delivery and targeting
-Personalised medicine
-Pharmaceutical nanotechnology and nanomedicines
-Delivery of biopharmaceuticals

Learning Outcomes

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

By the end of this module the students should be able to:

•       Discuss the scientific principles underpinning drug formulation.
•       Outline the design and development of different drug delivery systems.
•       Identify and discuss different routes of drug administration and the challenges encountered in those formulations.
•       Display up-to-date knowledge of the major developments in formulation science and advanced drug delivery.
•       Display an appropriate knowledge of the manufacture and quality control of pharmaceutical dosage forms.
•       Display an appropriate understanding of the drug development process.

Intended Skill Outcomes

By the end of this module the students should be able to:
•       Be proficient in the use of appropriate databases and critically assess primary and secondary literature.
•       Critically evaluate the current developments in advanced formulation science and drug delivery.
•       Apply advanced skills in interpretation and discussion of data and extrapolate the significance of the results to the pharmaceutical community at large.
•       Critically appraise conventional drug delivery systems and review the rationale for advanced approaches to drug delivery.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Theoretical content will be provided by lectures and provide a framework on which to construct further guided independent learning. Weekly interactive seminars will involve collaborative problem based activities that will encourage students to apply and build on the previous week’s learning and facilitate deeper learning on current research and development of advanced drug formulation and delivery through social interaction. Tutorial, seminars and student-lead activities also provide an opportunity to develop other skills including interpersonal skill, oral communication, collaboration, critical appraisal and information literacy. Surgery sessions provide extra opportunities for individual learning support that tailor to more specific individual learning needs.

Formative Assessments

Formative Assessment is an assessment which develops your skills in being assessed, allows for you to receive feedback, and prepares you for being assessed. However, it does not count to your final mark.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The coursework will allow the students to show that they have fully understood all of the elements required in order to formulate an enhanced drug delivery system. Coursework is preferred as it provides a mechanism for the students to show that they are able to integrate the separate elements together to develop a specific drug formulation design.

Each student will be given a case based on a currently unmet pharmaceutical formulation need. Students will be expected to carry out a literature review to present the current knowledge and, based on that, to derive a proposal to meet the formulation need. Knowledge and skills will also be formatively assessed by small group presentation of a strategy relating to a new formulation development, followed by a question and answer session. This formative assessment will provide an opportunity for further feedback on their formulation design proposal. Each student will then submit a summative written plan to describe their chosen formulation design and how the chosen designed be tested. These tasks have been designed to prepare students for a typical working environment where team work and diplomacy are as important as knowledge.
