Aims

The aim of this module is to provide students with knowledge on sustainability and sustainable development of supply chains, ranging from raw materials suppliers, manufacturers and service providers, towards final customers. It provides a set of theories, tools and skills to identify, evaluate, and improve the sustainability of manufacturing and service supply chains. It enables students to understand and design the sustainable supply chain to deliver value to customers through embedded sustainability in the collaboration among all supply chain partners.

Outline Of Syllabus

The module will cover:
1. Sustainability and sustainable development
2. Linear supply chain and circular supply chain
3. Triple bottom line and sustainable supply chain management
4. Sustainable procurement
5. Sustainable product design and production
6. Sustainable logistics

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Elaborate on the importance and the role of sustainable supply chain management
• Analyse and evaluate enablers and drivers of sustainable supply chain management
• Identify managerial challenges of sustainable supply chain implementation and provide recommendations
• Operate and manage supply chains to achieve sustainable development

At the end of the module students should be able to:
• Design sustainable supply chains and measure sustainable supply chain performance
• Compose strategies towards the sustainable development of supply chains

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Both pip lectures and seminars introduce theoretical issues as well as practical issues and cases relating to sustainable supply chain management. The seminars will improve students' ability to solve real-world problems by applying theories.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The essay tests students’ acquisition of clear general knowledge of the module and the ability to apply sustainable supply chain theory and applications in solving different supply chain management and logistics issues. The essay will also examine whether students can write clearly and concisely.

Formative assessment of the student progression is assessed during the seminar sessions where students are provided with case study exercises. Students are divided into groups with cases provided to each group. Students need to complete the case study and present their results in the session by themselves, and feedbacks will be provided in the same seminar.
