Aims

To be equipped to analyse data for qualitative or quantitative research projects.

Outline Of Syllabus

Will focus on preparing data for analysis, understanding which test to do, how to do it in RStudio and how to present results for the dissertation
• Qualitative data: research methods and evaluative criteria;
Quantitative data: Correlation and regression; parametric and non-parametric comparison of means; multivariate techniques using RStudio.

Learning Outcomes

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

By the end of the Module a successful student will be able to describe the types of experimental data and variables.

Intended Skill Outcomes

By the end of the Module a successful student will be able to:
1. manipulate and present data so it is suitable for analysis
2. suggest which statistical test to use in which situation
3. carry statistics out in R including: correlation, regression, parametric and non-paramentric comparison of
means, chi-squared tests, multivariate analyses. GLM includes e.g. multiway anovas, basic mixed models,
repeated measures.
4. present statistical methods and results in a manner suitable for a scientific paper
5. apply and evaluate the use of qualitative research methods in a research project

Formative Assessments

Formative Assessment is an assessment which develops your skills in being assessed, allows for you to receive feedback, and prepares you for being assessed. However, it does not count to your final mark.

Description Semester When Set Comment
Written Examination1MPractice exam that is made available with answers. Students can self-assess or peer assess.
Assessment Rationale And Relationship

Assessment will assess students’ learning as they will be presented with data sets; they have to decide how best to analyse, interpret and present the data to answer specific questions.

Each practical will provide examples which potentially mimic dissertation data, and also act as practice for their assessment.

Study Abroad students may request to take their exam before the semester 1 exam period, in which case the format of the paper may differ from that shown in the MOF. Study Abroad students should contact the school to discuss this.
