Aims

In consonance with the overall aims of the Politics degrees, this optional module aims to build on skills and knowledge gained in stages 1 and 2. In particular, the aim is to allow students studying academic courses at an approved institution abroad to accredit, at Newcastle University, their study abroad to a total of 10 ECTS credits or the equivalent thereof, if this mark is better than their worst stage 2 mark in a successfully completed module. Students may not use this module to substitute marks obtained abroad for any failed modules in stage 2.

Outline Of Syllabus

1. Preparatory Seminar before the Year abroad
2. Individual meetings where students submit the relevant information and material to the Module Leader.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

Students must pass assessments for eligible courses (see below) that have an aggregate minimum value of 10 ECTS credits (or the equivalent in a non-ECTS institution).

Eligible courses are all courses except the following:

(i) beginners language courses (in any language)
(ii) courses of a non-academic nature (e.g. tennis, skiing etc.).

Students must provide substantial documentation for each assessment, including

(1) all relevant information about the assessment produced by the host University;
(2) copies of the work that has been assessed. If copies of the work do not exist because they took the form of oral or written exams that are not returned, then the student supply a list of questions, indicating which ones they selected.

Assessment methods will vary according to the courses taken abroad.

The mark awarded by Newcastle University for POL3043 will be based on the student’s mark(s) in those eligible modules taken abroad, amounting or equating to 10 ECTS credits, in which he/she has performed best.

A single mark is reached by converting the marks gained in the module(s) defined above to the Newcastle scale. If this involves conflating two or more marks, an average is taken that reflects the credit weighting accorded to each mark.

RESIT ASSESSMENT:
There is no resit for this module, as it is an option that will only be chosen, if it is in the student's interest i.e. their best marks from abroad are better than their worst stage 2 module mark.

Assessment rationale will vary according to modules taken.
