Aims

This module is designed to build on the research skills developed on Advanced Research Methods for Applied Psychology A. A specific focus is to equip students with the necessary skills to enable them to plan and conduct independent research. This module focuses on qualitative methods including but not limited to grounded theory, IPA and mixed designs. The module is designed to adhere to the recommendations made by the BPS for research methods modules on accredited programmes.

Outline Of Syllabus

Topics covered will include:
• Advanced research design;
• Advanced qualitative methods;
• Mixed methodology research designs

Learning Outcomes

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

On successful completion of the module a student will be able to :
1.       Identify the essentials of good research design and advanced knowledge of qualitative methodologies.
2.       Choose and apply appropriate techniques for the analysis and interpretation of psychological data
3.       Identify key concepts and procedures, and develop a more critical understanding of research issues within qualitative methodologies.

Intended Skill Outcomes

On successful completion of the module a student will be able to :
1.       Identify, evaluate and critically appraise research evidence.
2.       Identify, carry out, interpret and disseminate results from appropriate data analysis.
3.       Plan and conduct a qualitative interview
4.       Differentiate between qualitative methodologies and apply them accordingly
5.       Have an awareness of mixed method research designs
6.       Write up psychological research according to psychological conventions.
7.       Present their research findings to appropriate audiences.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Present in person (PIP) workshop-based learning activities will be used as the main way to impart knowledge and to stimulate interests in the topics. These will be used across the module to facilitate a workshop approach to module delivery to clarify and enhance understanding of module content.

The format is designed to ensure the module aims are achieved within the context of current applied psychology. Teaching focuses on practical activities that allow the students first-hand experience of skills the module will develop. The interactive nature of the sessions are designed to prepare students for future independent research and will foster critical thinking. To attain the intended knowledge outcomes and skills in full, it will be essential that students engage in private study.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

This module will be assessed by one summative assessment as detailed below:

Students will be provided with an extract from an interview transcript. Students will be required to analyse this transcript extract using a qualitative technique of their choice, following the procedure outlined in teaching sessions. Student should write a report of no more than 2,500 (excluding quotes) to summarise the findings.

This will assess both the knowledge and skills outcomes for this module.

Formative Assessment: Students will also have the opportunity to code one page of a given interview transcript and receive feedback on this in class.
