Aims
The module aims to provide an NHS internship, in the area of mental health, for two MSc psychology students following a rigorous selection process. Students will complete an approved year-long placement in an NHS Trust. If successful they will then be offered an interview for admission to the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology.
Outline Of Syllabus
Students will spend a year working with the NHS Clinical Internship provider, and guidelines relating to that particular service will be followed. The module aims to promote experience of working in an NHS context and students will be assessed on the competencies and skills peculiar to their individual internships as well as those common to all such work settings, including formulation and supervision. The internship will enhance transferable skills such as communication, planning, time management, team working, decision making, initiative and working as a professional in a large organisation.
Learning Outcomes
Intended Knowledge Outcomes
Students will have knowledge of clinical assessment, formulation and intervention in an NHS context. This may include:
The role of psychologists, within the NHS professional settings.
The needs of clients in the service in which they are based.
Theories and concepts relevant to the specific psychological services setting.
The processes of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment that are used for psychological disorders in the setting in which they are working.
The laws, rules and regulations which govern practice in the NHS.
Intended Skill Outcomes
Students will have skills related to the practical application of clinical assessment, formulation and intervention in an NHS context.
Skills outcomes will also include items from the Trainee Competency Checklist as agreed by the Placement Supervisors when the student is allocated to the placement.

Description | When Set | Comment |
---|---|---|
Poster | M | A poster to present to colleagues and students, giving an overview of the placement experience. |
Report | M | A 3000 reflective report on knowledge gained during internship. |
Report | M | 3 separate reports (1 at end of each Semester, with the final report from the NHS Supervisor at the end of Semester 3). |
Assessment Rationale And Relationship
Both the poster and the reflective report will give students the opportunity to reflect formally and constructively about their Internship year, including upon the skills and knowledge acquired in relation to the NHS Clinical setting. They will encourage critical thinking, evaluation, and learning through reflection. Importantly, they allow for the demonstration of the intended knowledge and skills outcomes described above. The final report from the NHS Supervisor will then provide an external evaluation of the student’s performance over the duration of the Internship. A pass in each assessment must be obtained in order to pass the Internship year and be considered for the MSc award with Internship.
In the event of a fail of the Internship year, students will be considered for the award of MSc Foundations in Clinical Psychology.
In order to pass the module students must pass each of the three components of assessment; the poster, the reflective report, and the NHS Supervisor's three reports. If the poster or reflective report is failed, it will have to be retaken and a pass mark obtained (students will be given 4 weeks from notification of fail to resubmit their work). However, no resit can be offered for the Supervisor reports. Thus if the supervisor reports are failed, this will constitute a fail for the entire module.
