To allow students to develop in depth a topic which may draw on but also extend material studied in one (or more) of their English Language and Linguistics modules. To foster independent thinking and develop research skills in critical thinking, writing and presentation. These aims will be achieved by students doing independent research in an English language/linguistics topic, and writing up their results in an extended essay (5000 words). In this, they will be helped by a supervisor, i.e. a member of staff with relevant expertise in the general topic area that the student is working in.

To develop a topic in depth which draws on work undertaken in an ordinary module in the field of English language/linguistics.

Students will consult an appropriate member of staff about topic and approach and will only be allowed to begin work on the extended study when their topic has been approved. There will be further consultation with the supervisor to check progress. The main aim of the extended study is to foster skills of independent working and to allow students to plan and complete a more extended piece of work.
The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners
