Aims
- Exploring the formation and diffusion of new words, mainly in present-day English, using modern digital tools
- Acquainting the student with relevant concepts and topics in lexicology and morphology necessary for understanding lexical innovation
- Developing the student’s critical abilities by examining competing approaches to theoretical issues in lexical innovation
- Preparing the student for carrying out independent research in lexical innovation
Outline Of Syllabus
Topics to be dealt with include data for lexical innovation and methods of analysing it, the structure of lexical items, issues in the study of morphological productivity and measurements of lexical frequency, new lexis in recent English, and theoretical views on these topics.

Intended Knowledge Outcomes
Students that have successfully completed this module:
1. have gained knowledge of the scope and nature of lexical innovation in English;
2. understand the problems arising in collecting data on lexical innovation and are aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the various solutions that have been adopted;
3. have gained knowledge of lexicological and morphological concepts that are needed to analyse lexical innovation;
4. understand the strengths and limitations of different analytic frameworks.
Intended Skill Outcomes
Students that have successfully completed this module:
1. are able to identify and analyse cases of lexical innovation in English;
2. are able to use with facility relevant lexicological and morphological concepts and apply these in their own research;
3. are able to deal independently with technical literature on the subject;
4. are able to deal with complex argumentation that integrates theoretical and empirical concerns;
5. are able to carry out an independent study of a specific type of lexical innovation;
6. are able to report the results of this study in the form of an academic essay.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Lecture materials introduce data and the methods and concepts needed for their systematic collection and analysis. The small group teaching gives the student the opportunity to consolidate understanding of issues raised in reading and in lectures and to assess the success and compatibility of different types of analysis.

The in-class test assesses the student’s acquisition of knowledge and ability to apply it to selected data. The final essay gives students the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to carry out an independent investigation in the field of lexical innovation.
