Aims

To explore the ways in which writing is produced, distributed, promoted to and consumed by audiences. To explore the parts played by individuals and institutions, including (but not limited to) agents, editors, arts administrators and the media, and the important role of new technologies in contemporary publishing. To explore formal and informal career routes, and ways of supporting the development of new writers, by organisations and individuals.

Outline Of Syllabus

The Profession of Writing consists of seminars given by individuals and representatives, including leading professionals in the publishing industry, broadcast arts, arts support agencies, arts administration, and writers who have recently published or received awards of funding for their work. It is an opportunity for students to learn about multiple processes that shape the literary world, through talks and discussion.

Learning Outcomes

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

Students will gain an understanding of the relationship between drafts and manuscripts and the published product and how it is promoted and consumed. They will engage with issues surrounding editing, anthologising, publishing, curating and canonising. They will explore processes that include (but are not limited to) reviewing, funding processes and residencies, the range of small presses and other outlets for writing, including writing for performance.

Intended Skill Outcomes

Students will learn to present their work orally and in written form; they may also learn techniques of editing and reviewing, and skills relevant to arts administration.
