Aims

The aim of this module is to provide students with an appreciation of laboratory emergency procedures and safety. It will develop proficiency in a wide range of exercise testing and laboratory diagnostic procedures. The module will encourage critical appraisal of the selection of diagnostic procedures or tests and develop the skill of critical reflection.

Outline Of Syllabus

The syllabus will cover the following topics:

•       Laboratory and equipment safety
•       Blood sampling and analysis
•       Pre-screening and cardiorespiratory testing
•       12 lead ECG – rest and exercise, normal and abnormal trace interpretation
•       Measurement of muscle function: frail to highly trained
•       Peak cardiorespiratory fitness: in disease and athlete
•       Physical assessment of the frail
•       Sport specific performance monitoring
•       Operating in extreme environments

Learning Outcomes

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

At the end of the module successful students should be able to:
1.       Show an awareness of good practice in accordance with the BASES code of conduct of ethics, safety, and risk assessment;
2.       Describe appropriate emergency procedures that might arise prior to, during and after administration of an exercise test;
3.       Demonstrate the skills and knowledge for administering and interpreting an exercise test;
4.       Demonstrate competencies in the performance and selection of laboratory procedures and techniques;
5.       Critically evaluate current research in new techniques in relation to their validity, reliability and the importance of scientific methodologies in clinical exercise physiology;
6.       Critically reflect on their performance.

Intended Skill Outcomes

At the end of the module successful students should be able to:
1.       Collect and analyse data from a range of physiological assessment techniques;
2.       Critically appraise various methods of monitoring physiological changes with acute and chronic exercise.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Combined lecture and laboratory sessions provide the platform for providing key knowledge and concepts

Combining the lectures and laboratory sessions in the new teaching spaces will allow theory and practice to be delivered simultaneously, allowing students the opportunity to practice and reflect on their skills development, individually and in small groups, also enhancing their critical and analytical skills.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

This module is designed to lay the foundation knowledge and practical skills required to go onto complete their research project. The practical skills assessment will assess each student’s knowledge base, comprehension of each test, and their competence in conducting these procedures in a formal setting. The student will present proposed physiological techniques to be used at baseline and follow-up in a client of their choosing (athlete or patient). The presentation will assess each student’s ability to scrutinise physiological tests in terms of appropriateness for population, reliability, validity, sensitivity, limitations and how to implement these procedures.
