Aims

The aim of this module is to provide the student with an understanding of the metabolic responses to exercise, how this influences nutritional needs, and what are appropriate practices in sports nutrition.

Outline Of Syllabus

The syllabus will cover the following topics:

-       Energy demands during exercise and recovery
-       Regulation of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism
-       Whole-body, tissue, cellular and molecular responses to exercise
-       Nutrient-exercise interactions: implications for training adaptation
-       Carbohydrate, fat and protein requirements for athletes
-       Dietary supplements for athletes

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

At the end of the module, successful students should be able to:
-       Describe the metabolic responses to exercise of different modes, intensities and durations
-       Explain the factors regulating substrate metabolism during exercise and recovery
-       Understand nutrition-exercise interactions and how these drive training adaptation
-       Appreciate the variety of techniques available to investigate metabolic responses to exercise
-       Critically evaluate sports nutrition advice regarding carbohydrate, protein and fat intake and the use of supplements

Intended Skill Outcomes

On completion of this module, successful students should be able to:
-       Critically appraise the literature in exercise metabolism and sports nutrition
-       Provide evidence-based sports nutrition advice to athletes and practitioners

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Lectures will introduce students to a range of fundamental concepts within the field of exercise metabolism and sports nutrition. Small group teaching activities (seminars) will then examine these concepts in greater depth, with critical evaluation of the scientific literature and consideration for practical application to sport.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

As this module’s main learning outcomes are focused around students becoming knowledgeable in the field of exercise nutrition and metabolism, and ability to translate this into practice, the assessments are aimed and designed to critically evaluate this both in written and presentation format. The presentation assessments’ secondary aim is to give students experience of presenting work in a format similar to that if delivering to a room of academics and sports nutrition practitioners.

MDiet candidates must obtain an overall mark of 50 or above to pass the module, however, if the module has more than one assessment students must also achieve a mark of at least 35 in each component of the assessment to pass the module.
