Aims
To build on core skills acquired in translation, localisation, subtitling, and interpreting modules in order to allow students to produce and evaluate a substantial piece of practical work in translation, localisation, subtitling or interpreting studies.
In a separate Commentary students evaluate the work and discuss issues arising from it.
Outline Of Syllabus
Because each student translates or interprets a different text and writes a Commentary about that text, there is no fixed syllabus.

Intended Knowledge Outcomes
Students should achieve the following learning outcomes:
* Produce a substantial piece or portfolio of high-quality practical translation, localisation, subtitling, and interpreting work in Chinese -> English and/or English->Chinese mode.
* Bring together ideas they have encountered in the taught part of the programme in order to evaluate the work and comment on issues arising from it.
Intended Skill Outcomes
Over the course of the project, students will develop the following skills:
* Ability to perform advanced translation, localisation, subtitling, or interpreting skills
* Ability to prepare for and carry out translation, localisation, subtitling, and interpreting assignments professionally
* Ability to conduct research into advanced translation, localisation, subtitling, and interpreting studies
* Ability to demonstrate appropriate use of relevant sources.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
The tutorials provide guidance and in-depth feedback. They allow students to bring together ideas they have developed during the taught part of the programme and apply theory through practice. They also encourage the development of independent study and research skills. They facilitate monitoring of student progress. Students are encouraged to assess their own progress to identify and resolve their specific learning issues.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
Either
Translating/localisation/subtitling: A piece or portfolio of written translation/localisation/subtitling plus a commentary.

Interpreting: A video/audio portfolio of oral interpreting work plus a commentary.
The format and length of the translation, interpretation and commentary is specified in the module handbook.
To be submitted by September of the final year in which the degree is taken (exact date is specified in module Handbook)
The two components of the assessment the practical work (translating/localisation/subtitling/interpreting), and the commentary carry the same weighting (50/50) in the final mark. In order to pass this module at the MA level, candidates must attain a minimum of 50% in both practical work and commentary components. A Fail mark for one or both of the assessment components will require reassessment of the failed component/s. The returned mark for each reassessed component will be capped at the pass mark of 50. The final module mark will be capped at 50 or at the original module mark, whichever is higher.
The assessment tests both the students' knowledge of theories and their ability in translating and interpreting. It also allows students to demonstrate their ability to apply the principles and techniques learned to a simulated real-life project.
