Aims
To develop competence on practical planning problems to replicate live planning situations.
To develop core skills of problem definition, data collection and analysis, communication, presentation and team work.
To introduce links between planning practice and planning systems and structure.
Presentations of examples of spatial planning projects.
This module provides some ideas and skills for thinking about planning interventions. It introduces some socio-spatial and process ideas on how and why to develop spatial strategies. You will work in groups on a very intensive project to develop a spatial strategy for your given area of Newcastle or Gateshead. Through attending lectures, workshops and site visits and through working on this strategy, you will have the opportunity to develop these skills and understandings.

Intended Knowledge Outcomes
By the end of this module students will be able to:
• Detail the data collection and analysis process and tools used to understand spatial areas
• Detail the techniques used to develop a vision, engage with stakeholders and to fund and deliver a spatial strategy
• Outline the presentation and communication required to prepare and present spatial strategy proposals.

By the end of this module students will be able to:
Demonstrate a clear ability regarding
• the collection and analysis of data, in order to understand the issues for a spatial area,
• to develop an appropriate vision and strategy for the spatial area
• to work effectively in a group to prepare the strategy
• to be able to clearly present and communicate the spatial strategy

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The project tests the ability to understand, analyse and offer solutions to practical planning problems. It also tests the students' presentation skills. Each group usually consists of 5 to 6 students.
