Aims

1. To develop an in-depth knowledge of urban space and urban design
2. To improve the students' capacity for research and critical debate
3. To develop the students' skills in visual and verbal presentation

Outline Of Syllabus

The course involves intensive study of major issues in urban design from a variety of disciplines, architecture, urban design, town planning, urban studies, urban geography and urban sociology. The course emphasizes the theoretical debates which inform the processes of urban development and design. It involves reading, researching, presenting and discussing set texts.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

The teaching methods of reading, presenting and discussing major writings on urban design enable the students to develop the necessary awareness of the key themes in urban design, become familiar with some of the major writers in the field, develop a critical understanding of these themes, develop the presentation and critical debate skills. If necessary, the Present in Person element will be delivered at the programme level.
