Aims

To introduce students to contemporary theory and methods relating to Green Infrastructure (GI), nature based solutions (NbS) and landscape planning (LP). This module will respond to the following key questions: What is landscape? What is Green Infrastructure planning? What is a nature based solution approach in planning? How can these planning approaches be used as a strategy to enhance, restore, create or conserve all landscapes? How can you apply Green Infrastructure, Nature based approaches and Landscape Planning in professional practice?

Outline Of Syllabus

A combination of lectures, on-line tutorials, synchronous and asynchronous teaching including a day field trip will introduce concepts and techniques which will be followed by independent learning and reading concerning Green infrastructure, nature based solutions and landscape planning practice and opportunities to raise awareness of planning at the landscape scale.

Students will undertake an individual assessment of a published plan or strategy related to the above to hone their skills.

Student Assignments will follow-up lecture material and will involve literature search, small group discussion, individual written work.

The structure of the module will be issues based relating to Green infrastructure, nature based solutions and landscape planning using examples which may include the following:

Green Infrastructure plans; Landscape character assessment; cultural landscapes; perceptual issues; public involvement/community participation; landscape ecological planning & nature-based solutions; recreation and tourism; seascape, marine and coastal landscape planning; landscape design guidelines; responses to climate change issues.

Note: The emphasis in this module will be on developing an understanding of theory and methods with a view to exploring more practical application in the associated project module in Semester 2.

• An understanding of Green infrastructure, nature based solutions and landscape planning theories and methods.
• An understanding of how to approach these issues through the development of an appropriate methodology for organising, analysing, synthesising and interpreting complex data relating to large scale landscapes.
• An understanding of present tools and techniques available for Green infrastructure, nature based solutions and landscape planning.
• The development of an awareness of the requirements of working on multi-disciplinary GI, NbS and
landscape planning projects.
• An understanding of the issues of Green infrastructure, nature based solutions and landscape planning for sustainability in both the urban and rural context.

Intended Skill Outcomes

• The development of an ability to take a methodological and integrated approach to these planning issues.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

This module is taught through a variety of methods which explores landscape issues through an examination of Green Infrastructure (GI), nature based solutions (NbS), Nature based Approaches and Landscape Planning (LP) methods including two framework models.
Lecture material provides baseline information, introduce concepts, theories and methods. Case study examples from practice are used to illustrate how theoretical concepts can be used as the basis for contemporary professional practice.
An individual review of an existing plan or strategy exercise by the students will introduce concepts of ‘landscape’, NbS and GI planning in urban and rural contexts.
Discussions will allow students to discuss theoretical concepts in greater depth and develop academic skills including their analytical skills. Student Assignments will follow-up lecture material and will involve assimilating information from literature.
The emphasis in this module will be on developing an understanding of theory and methods with a view to exploring more practical application in the associated project module in Semester 2.
