Sites on nih.gov domains unavailable on campus network - incident reference 1075664 / Problem reference 4000236.

UPDATE 16:00 (26/01/2024)

Unfortunately we are unable to report any progress in our attempts to resolve this issue with our US contacts.

As previously advised, this is an intermittent issue so if you are unable to access sites on this domain, the workaround is to connect to a non-University network (home or public broadband/mobile data).

An update will be posted on this page as soon as we have any further information.

We fully appreciate the impact this is having our our students and colleagues and we are continuing to source a resolution as soon as possible.

We apologise for the inconvenience and we will continue to keep you informed of any updates.

UPDATE - 14:00 (29/11/2023)

We have now made contact with Network Engineers over the water at NIH.  We've shared our network logs and they are looking into the root cause.

An update will follow once we hear back from our contacts in the US.

UPDATE - 14:45 (21/11/2023)

The issue of traffic from our network being rejected by or not being able to reach .nih.gov websites has been reported again today.

After a further round of investigations our findings confirm that the issue is intermittent and the root cause remains at the domain owner's end.

We have raised a call with their technical team and are awaiting a response.

While the issue appears to be intermittent, the issue is specifically impacting traffic from devices on our network.  Therefore the work around where possible is to access nih.gov sites from off campus or if on campus by tethering to mobile networks if your data plan allows.

We appreciate this situation is not ideal for those impacted and we are continuing to source a resolution as soon as we can by working with the nih.gov domain owners.

While we are unable to fix the issue, as it is not within our own configuration, we do apologise for the inconvenience and we will continue to keep you informed here of any updates.

RESOLVED - 15:30 (17/11)

This incident is now resolved. All users should now be able to use nih.gov websites as usual.

The domain owners have investigated and applied a fix which has restored access to these websites

Thank you for your understanding and patience whilst this matter was investigated and resolved, we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.

A review will be carried out into the circumstances of this service interruption, and necessary measures will be taken to mitigate the risk of future disruption.

We've been investigating reports that any site hosted on the nih.gov domain is inaccessible whilst connected to the campus network or EduRoam.

Our investigations confirm that the issue is with the nih.gov domain itself, and we are aware that is also affecting other Higher Education Institution (HEI) networks. We’ve contacted the domain host, but are yet to receive a response.

As a workaround, these sites may be accessible when using a non-HEI network, i.e. home or public networks.

We apologise for any inconvenience and we will continue to keep you informed of any updates.
