Education outreach - workshops

We welcome visits from school parties offering handling sessions, source evaluation, A-Level study sessions, cholera investigation and games. Where possible we try to tailor each visit to the individual needs of the group.

Campaign: Make an Impact (suitable for Key Stage 2 and 3, day workshop)

Campaign: Make an ImpactBe inspired by an historical campaign in the past to start your own modern day campaign. This day long workshop follows the British Library's model and includes access to original resources, source analysis, ICT work, etc. We currently offer campaign workshops on cholera/public health and the English Civil War.

How to Research in a University Library

ResearchThis interactive workshop offers your students the opportunity to research and study in Newcastle University's Library. The workshop is supported with taught sessions on research skills, plagiarism, referencing, searching for resources as well as providing a useful introduction to university life.

Medicine Through Time (suitable for Key Stage 4, half or day workshop)

Medicine Through TimeThis workshop allows students to study first hand the works of Vesalius and Pare. The students are encouraged to research why History has remembered Vesalius and Pare and why the Renaissance period was such a turning point in the History of Medicine.

Nineteenth Century Newcastle-Upon-Tyne (suitable for Key Stage 2-5, 1 hour - 1 day workshops available)

Nineteenth Century Newcastle-Upon-TyneStep back in time and see what Newcastle used to be like. Using a mixture of sources and online activities this interactive workshop focuses upon the following aspects of 19th century Newcastle: mining, poverty and transport. There is the option to extend this workshop into a daylong research task using enquiry based learning.

Introduction to Special Collections (suitable for Key Stage 2 – 5, 30 minutes - 1 hour)

Introduction to Special Collections Introduce your students to the hidden wonders of archives as they literally touch History. This session gives an overview of what gems are hidden away in your local archives, e.g. seals of Henry VIII, 1832 cholera outbreak, civil war propaganda, 1906 election posters, local history and many more! Please note: this workshop can be combined with any of the others on offer.

Source Analysis (Key Stage 2 – 5, 1 hour)

Source AnalysisThis workshop introduces students to a wide range of sources and asks them to question their bias, provenance, purpose, etc. Access to original resources and use of online enquiry based learning ensures this is a source analysis lesson they are likely to remember. Please note: for GCSE and A level it may be possible to focus this upon their exam syllabus e.g. medicine through time, crime and punishment, 1906 election, etc.

Sustainability (suitable for Key Stage 3, 1 day)

SustainabilityThis interactive session allows the students to study the library to assess how sustainable it is. They are in charge and need to complete electricity and litter surveys, interview key members of staff and offer advice and solutions for improvement. The afternoon focuses upon raising awareness with our own university students through the designing of posters.
