Together: co-housing, community and the city

Work developed by our current BA (Hons) Architecture Stage 2 students is on display in bus shelters along Shields Road, Byker

25 May 2023

Work developed by our current BA (Hons) Architecture Stage 2 students will be on display as part of an exhibition aimed at fostering community engagement and participation along Shields Road, Byker. As part of their Semester 1 design project, 'Together: co-housing, community and the city', students were asked to explore and develop design proposals for a small-scale co-housing scheme and adjoining not-for-profit community space; retrofitting and extending an existing building located along Shields Road.

On display as part of a bus stop trail and broader exhibition curated by local artists Sally Southern and Nicola Lynch, the proposals and ideas imagined by students respond to feedback collected from local residents and businesses between August and October 2022 for Newcastle City Council’s Newcastle East High Streets Programme: https://www.newcastle.gov.uk/our-city/transport-improvements/outside-city-centre/neighbourhoods/newcastle-east-inclusive-healthy.

The trail and exhibition opened on Monday 22nd May at the East End Library, Byker. The work can also be viewed online using the following link: https://padlet.com/kieranconnolly/together-co-housing-community-and-the-city-c7nswy83rsj50a66.
