Catch up on this year's events
In this year’s NCL in Action programme we held 17 events around the world, including a tri-campus launch day in Newcastle, Malaysia and Singapore.
These events connected our global alumni community with current students, retired staff and business partners to upskill on the topic of AI and explore how future technologies will impact our personal lives and our careers.
Our Newcastle Discover lectures welcomed Newcastle University researchers who shared the latest AI research taking place within the University, as well as fellow alumni and industry experts who offered practical advice about how to get the most out of AI in your everyday life. These lectures are now available to catch up on via our YouTube channel, and include:
Artificial Intelligence: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Dr Scott Stainton, Technology Director at Collaboraite and Newcastle University graduate, joined us for this Newcastle Discover webinar to examine AI through different lenses, including:
- The good uses in areas such as threat detection for law enforcement, lifesaving diagnoses in medical imaging, and augmenting and accelerating human decision making.
- The bad uses for malicious purposes such as sophisticated phishing and impersonation attacks.
- The ugly side in terms of how exploitation of AI can erode trust.
AI and the music industry
The world of music is one defined by constant disruption from vinyl, to CD, to streaming. How is the world of music dealing with its latest challenge: AI? For some, AI is seen as a saviour and others as a destroyer; what is the reality for the industry and creativity?
The speaker for this event is Hazel Savage; a Newcastle graduate, music-tech lifer, guitarist and former CEO/Co-Founder at Musiio and Former VP Music Intelligence at Soundcloud.
