Located on Newcastle’s busy Gallowgate, La Yuan, is a restaurant that serves up authentic food from the Sichuan region of China.
Joshy, 2014 BA Marketing and Management graduate and Georgina, 2012, MSc Quantitative Finance and Risk Management graduate opened La Yuan in November 2016.
The two business partners met during their time at ‘Into Newcastle’. Georgina then went on to study for her Master’s degree and Joshy completed his undergraduate course.
After graduating and starting on their own career paths, Joshy shared his dream of building the restaurant with Georgina and the rest, as they say, is history.
They have built the eatery up from scratch and, using the skills learnt from their time studying at the Business School, manage all aspects of the business. Georgina deals with the finances and Joshy takes on a general management role.
After securing support from the University’s Foundership start-up programme and acquiring the property in January, they have transformed the old Ladbrooks retail space, into a beautiful minimalistic restaurant.
Listening to experts has been a crucial factor in their success. They flew a Chef from China to do tasting sessions in Newcastle to make sure the cuisine was perfect for the palette of those in the North East.
Fellow Business School alumnus, Peter Hunt, who runs an innovative hospitality group in Newcastle, has also mentored the entrepreneurs throughout. The group also sought advice from the University Careers Service mentors.
Joshy believes that having mentors has been a vital part of the business so far; “the advice we have received from our mentors has been invaluable”.
With all the challenges of setting up a business, Joshy says that the most challenging aspect of it all has been “efficiency and focus, ensuring that everything we do is to help the business to grow”.
La Yuan translates as ‘Spice Garden’ and is open from 12:00 – 23:00, Monday – Sunday.
