The Professions, Work and Organization research group is concerned with furthering our understanding of professions, their work and organization.
Our research group's remit covers both traditional professions such as law and accountancy, and new and emerging forms of knowledge work such as management consultancy and project management.
We're decisively multi-disciplinary, bringing together colleagues from a number of management subjects such as organization studies, strategy, employment relations, critical accountancy, marketing and economics. We also reach out to a range of disciplines in the broader social sciences, including sociology, political science, law and economic geography.
Our research covers a broad range of themes, including the:
- management and organization of professional services firms
- emergence, development and decline of professional occupations
- broader societal and institutional role of professional occupations and organizations
- challenges of equality and diversity in professional contexts
This research group, under the leadership of its director Professor Daniel Muzio, is involved in a number of highly prominent activities which are shaping this field of research.
We're part hosts of the Journal of Professions and Organization (Oxford University Press). This is the first dedicated journal in this area of research.
We contribute to the editing of the Oxford Handbook of Professional Services Firms, and to the delivery of the EGOS standing group on Management, Occupations and Professions in Social Context.
More locally, we organize a regular programme of research seminars, master-classes and dissemination events.
For more information please see the research events page.
