The welfare of all animals, but particularly those in laboratories and on farms, is a matter of great public concern. Research into the behaviour of captive animals has an important role to play in welfare assessment and improvement, and is an area in which Newcastle has internationally recognised strengths.
CBE members have been active in researching and promoting the highest possible standards of welfare for laboratory animals. As well as scientific publications, they have produced a range of educational materials. For more details please visit:
Other CBE projects include developing a general framework for the understanding and assessment of emotion in animals. This is essential if welfare is to be assessed objectively.
Centre members have also been active in improving the welfare of farm animals. This is of economic as well as ethical significance, because poor welfare can result in increased mortality, and reduced productivity and meat quality.
