CESI Contribution to Book Chapter

The Springer book 'The Dynamics of Energy Research' based upon CESI research outputs was published this week.

Exciting news this week as a new book written by Dr. Antti Silvast and Dr. Chris Foulds includes outputs from CESI research.

The book examins and builds upon the following topics:

  • A new framework, the Sociology of Interdisciplinarity, drawing insights from STS and other literature
  • A detailed examination of the conception of interdisciplinary energy research
  • Fresh insights into the lived experiences and actual contents of interdisciplinarity

Chapter two, named 'Whole Systems Thinking and Modelling in the UK' dicusses CESI Co-Investigator Professor Simone Abram's social science research as part of CESI Work Package 1 and 6.

Within this chapter, Antti and Chris examine and collate efforts of interdisciplinary research from UK Academics across social, technological, and environmental impacts of integrated energy systems. In particular, the role of interdisciplinary computer modelling that was expected to represent complex energy transitions and energy infrastructures of the future are discussed.

Discussed are the three main findings of Dr Abram's work:

  • The diversity of interdisciplinary models and the case of energy demand (Sect. 2.3.2)
  • The challenges of prediction and the consequences of doing interdisciplinarity (Sect. 2.3.3)
  • Interdisciplinary planning under infrastructural conditions (Sect. 2.3.4).

Here you can find the open access book 'The Dynamics of Energy Research'.
