NUAcT PhD Studentship Opportunity in Novel Flexibility Markets and Services for Whole Energy Systems

CESI’s Newcastle University researchers are recruiting for a PhD Studentship in Novel Flexibility Markets and Services for Whole Energy Systems.

Newcastle University invites applications for the PhD Studentship for a 3-year period starting in September 2020.

Funded through Newcastle University Academic Track Fellowship Scheme, the studentship provides the successful applicant with 100% of tuition fees and annual living allowance of £15,285.

Future energy systems will have a greater need for flexibility to counteract the uncertain operating conditions driven by high penetrations of renewable generation. Energy system operators will need to access flexibility through a portfolio of markets and services. The operators have responsibility to ensure the system works within certain quality conditions and provides value to customers. Flexibility providers will be looking for opportunities to sell flexibility actions profitably. This PhD will aim answer one or more of the following research questions:

  • How is flexibility procured within energy systems? How this will change in future, low carbon systems with very high penetrations of renewable energy?
  • How can the value of flexibility within a future energy system be quantified?
  • How do we design and model flexibility markets and services for future energy systems?
  • How can we ensure that different flexible technologies can compete on a level playing field?
