Background

Dr Carmen Martin-Ruiz received her PhD in Human Physiology from the University of Paris VII. Her first post-doc was with the MRC Unit at Newcastle General Hospital as part of an international network researching nicotinic receptors role in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease but also in the context of schizophrenia, autism and vascular dementia. Later her research widened onto cell senescence and ageing and in 2006, within the Newcastle 85 cohort study, she was in charge of the assessment of an extensive panel of blood-derived biomarkers to look at how different health trajectories associate with biological factors such as cell senescence, inflammation and immunosenescence. She then became part of the Newcastle NIHR Biomedical Research Centre as manager of the Biomarker Lab where research is performed onto molecular markers of ageing that can be used to inform clinicians when assessing specific interventions and their impacts on a varied range of age-related diseases.
